To say it's coming out in May this year, we've seen extremely little of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Hopefully we get some official updates soon, because leaks are now starting to emerge about Rocksteady's upcoming action game. A new image of a test build of the title has appeared online, and it has people concerned.
The image, originating on 4chan but verified to VGC by a source, depicts a menu screen in which the player is preparing to take on a chapter of the game's main story:
Some fans are pointing out various things in the screenshot suggesting this will be rife with live service elements. Indeed, we can see a Battle Pass section, what appear to be various currencies, and some sort of level system on each character, possibly pertaining to gear.
However, VGC's "development source" has clarified the matter slightly. According to the source, the Battle Pass will be focused on cosmetic items like skins and outfits. Furthermore, the "currencies" near the top of the screen are apparently character-specific XP used to progress each of the squad's separate skill trees. A final comment from the source explains you won't "start off debuffed and weak", you will "start off great and can get ridiculous, like Arkham Knight's Batman".
To conclude, then, it doesn't sound like there's much cause for concern here. We knew it'd feature online co-op, and any modern game with an online emphasis is going to have some live service stuff. If it really is just cosmetic goodies, that's not really anything to worry about.
Again, we've seen very little official footage of the game, so it still feels too early to judge. What do you make of this leak? Don't go all King Shark in the comments section below.

Whilst it could avoid being terrible, it's coming across awfully similar to Marvel's Avengers to me. I'm going to keep a cautious eye on this one as the Batman Arkham games are great, but my hopes aren't high.
I am not surprised. The game always looked light and obnoxious. They are clearly trying to attract 13 year olds who like to steal their parents credit cards.
Nothing makes me want to put my wallet away quicker than hearing “Live Service” and “Battle Pass” in the same paragraph.
Let's just hope its not Avengers 2.0.
@PenguinLtd exactly! Insomniac’s Spider-man was a perfect example of how to do this right, respecting both the fans and the source material, and it sold well over 20 million copies as both proof and reward.
This sounds all very Marvels Avengers to me which was a perfect example of how not to do it, how to treat fans like ***** and disrespect the source material by carving the game into little bits.
“Cosmetic only” sucks too.
Anything where an online player can join your game is going to have some sort of cosmetic tweaks that people pay for, these days, for reasons unknown to me. (I mean, I know why games have them, but I just don't know why people fall for them and buy digital skins to feel as unique as any other idiot who buys the same thing)
Marvel's Avengers was good when it was just playing like a normal game, but tbh I finished all the actual good content it had in the free trial weekend thanks to rest mode. It wasn't jam packed with good stuff though, it was jam packed with a lot of stuff I wasn't bothered about.
I have a little more faith Rocksteady could at least give us 30 hours of the actual good stuff, on top of the coop and hub and new chapter out this week kind of stuff, if that ends up being the case to keep people playing coop way beyond release
They know how to kill of my buzz really fast a battlepass will it be the worst kind timed and liveservice I already know before release that I'm going to skip the game.
Can't say this is exciting to see but I'll still wait for more details before criticizing the game. We still basically know nothing aside from its a 4 player coop game that hopefully is fun enough as a single player experience as well.
Taking away the Battle Pass, even the Pause menu looks like Fortnite on steroids.
I’m out. That’ll take too much convincing even with gameplay to look anything other than something for 13 year olds now.
What still baffles me is why we need a Suicide Squad game when we could have a Justice League one. I mean I occasionally keep up with DC and I am not sure who the members of Suicide Squad are. I only vaguely remember them from the Arrow episodes.
I mean why would you want to play as Superman, Wonder Woman, Lantern, Green Arrow when you can play as Deadshot, Herley or Croc or whatever he is called.
It is not that Justice League, other than Batman, are present in modern games except maybe Injustice?
As long as it's good, you deserve my money
Yeah I'll just wait for Spider-Man for my superhero gaming, I just have no interest in having things like this in my games and I've got plenty of ther games to play
@belmont
Same reason SS was better than the JL film. The Ip doesn't matter.
Though I wanted a Superman game from Rocksteady, flying is very hard to implement and I don't want a DC game with the (lack of) quality of the DBZ games.
JL is just too outlandish to flush out every characters' crazy gameplay
RIP Suicide Squade
Would rather unlock outfits through the game with out battle passes
@themightyant if Spider-Man was a multi platform game, all of those extra skins would have been dlc. That’s one of the good things about Sony studio’s.
@BoldAndBrash I get that it is hard to balance a JL game especially the characters that fly, what I wanted to say is that playing as established characters would be more interesting. I don't remember Rocksteady from the top pf my head but a Superman and maybe a Green Arrow game were heavenly rumored even back to PS3 days. I have never played the Avengers game, but I guess they have flying implemented?
Each has his own taste, but SS was one of the worst comic book films I remember, second maybe to the joker as far as recent films go. Is that the film where Harley finds a bar and the others are just sitting there? I have only watched the Snyder version of JL and is one of my favourite comic books movies and I always enjoy rewatcing it.
And my interest is gone.
I have to admit, this is just not appealing to me. Perhaps they’ll do a better job with the attempt than Square-Enix did with Marvel’s Avengers, but the live service elements just ruined that game.
And it’s not that I am a close-minded single-player purist (…well, okay maybe I am) and I do realize the online MP live service loop is what’s popular now, but good grief don’t have it weigh down your game like Avengers did. That game was like have a tasty cake and then smearing excrement all over it so you could barely get to the good part. If you dig through the garbage you could find an okay game in there, but who wants to deal with that when you can play so many other games without having the GaaS stink all over it.
Wb gonna wb. As always.
Still cant believe this amazing studio has spent all this time working on this. No interest.
I expected the GaaS garbage polluting this game in some fashion. I did not expect it to be mission based with how they made the gameplay look, that’s also a huge bummer.
Oh noooo…such a bummer.
Unless Ed Sheeran is doing the soundtrack, it's hard to imagine how I could be any less interested in this game.
I always find the knee-jerk defense of this crap "muuuh but it's just cosmetics" so g*dd*mn tiresome and insulting. Completing challenges in a game to earn cool-looking cosmetics can be a really fun gameplay loop. Adding crap like FOMO, microtransactions, and tier-skips just overcomplicates and ruins so much of that fun by making the gameplay feel like a job. Plus this isn't a F2P game. It's going to be $70, and battle passes shouldn't be near a game that expensive.
If the game turns out to be good and more importantly FUN, I’m all over this. No one’s forcing me (or anyone else) to buy the battle pass or anything else that’s cosmetic so it really doesn’t matter.

Rocksteady just killed their own game.
I love that people are surprised that this is happening. It's WB, y'all. Did you forget how bad they are at this stuff?
The UI looks so generic. Live service does work in single player games but only if done right. Battle pass is not it.
So Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad were both Gaas at some point in development. When will Warner Bros stop their greed.
This is why I am very very cautious to feel positive about Hogwarts because that could easily be monetised to the grave too. Guess we'll see next month
At least Gotham Knights didn’t go down this path.
Not surprising at all & was expected by most people lol
King Shark ain’t the only thing that smells fishy around here.
geez, poor rocksteady. they spent 8 years working on this game — it has been in borderline development hell at times as well as various other projects were rumoured to have stalled or been cancelled in the menatime. they were one of the brightspots in the gaming world for a while there and created arguably the greatest superhero game of all time (in arkham asylum/city). now their studio is destined to be shut down due to poor sales as a result of a business model that is not of their own doing. ex members of rocksteady will band together to form their own studio but that will bring about its own problems, particularly with obtaining a decent budget. this scenario is all too common in the AAA space these days.
god this community complains about everything. debbie f-ing downers lol, cosmetic only isnt bad just skins so who cares if theres a battle pass, just like fortnite, overwatch and more doesnt affect gameplay.
@PenguinLtd it wouldnt be a different game lmao, gameplay is still the same with 1 outfit vs 20. lmao u just wanna hate and come up with ridiculous excuses.

We've known this was going to be a live-service game for the past two years. Whether all that live-game nonsense end up dragging everything down still remains to be seen, but I trust Rocksteady.
Let's save the pitchforks for release and judge it on what it is, rather than what we assume it to be.
@GeneJacket thank you! exactly
@SerJosh97 Those games you mentioned don't have a $70 entry point to play.
Guess I will keep playing GK it's not the greatest game by any means but oh well.
@belmont
You think Joker was a bad film? It was one of the best films that year. Also, I'm talking about The SS (second SS film), which was way better than JL.
My point is, you can't really make this. There are too many unique characters for them all to feel good. Avengers was garbage and the flying was also terrible. That's what happens in games with so many characters. Anthem is pretty much the only game that did flying right (besides flying cars in San Andreas! Still unbeaten).
I wanted that Rocksteady Superman game soooo bad!
@BoldAndBrash Yes, to be honest I didn't get the point of the Joker film. Comics tackle social issues and if this is what the point ok but the movie fails as a comic adaptation. This is the issue I had with some older Batman films. You got the impression that Batman was just there and you could replace him with a policeman and nothing would be lost.
I never watched the second SS movie because the first was very bad but I will check it.
I get it that making a Justice League action game is hard but it would be cool if someone pulled it off. But even as standalone games we have a lot of Batman and Spiderman and no Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Iron Man. Any of the above would be more interesting than a Suicide Squad online game.
Wow that killed my interest in this game so fast. That's fine, I've got other games to look forward to
@TripleKing333 This, so much this! It is getting to the point that as soon as I hear the words 'Live Service Game' I am instantly turned off. Getting sick and tired of that gaming model now as it seems that every game developer is heading in that direction in one way or another.
wow, that really kills it for me.
Not surprising at all, even more reason why I'll be waiting for launch day reviews and gameplay.
